Jan Buchanan grew up in Edmonton (Alberta). She became a Christian while a student at the University of Alberta. A few years later, through a trip to Africa and a missions conference at her church, she felt God's call to overseas missions.
Throughout her 20s and 30s, Jan lived in Quebec and in Ottawa. During that time she did various things, including serving with a campus Christian ministry and working as a French-English interpreter. She served in her local churches, took some Bible courses, and gained experience in evangelism and discipleship, leading Bible studies and promoting missions. She began attending the Ottawa Reformed Presbyterian Church in 1990 and became a member.
In 1995, Jan was sent out by ORPC to serve with a church-planting team in West Africa. During her 15 years there, she led Bible studies, learned to teach the Bible through chronological Bible storying, helped develop materials to train local Christians, hosted short-term missions teams and provided oversight to a church literacy program.
In 2011, Jan joined the Cush4Christ team. Initially, she focused on equipping partner church members, particularly women, for mercy ministry in the area of health. Now her main ministry focus is training teachers at Cush Christian School. She is also involved in literacy work, women's discipleship and other ways to build up the team's local church partners.
